My Thoughts on the Epstein Files | Sen. Bernie Sanders
In a candid and heartfelt message, Senator Bernie Sanders addresses the controversy surrounding the Epstein files and the broader implications of political promises, transparency, and the state of American democracy. Drawing from his deep commitment to truth and justice, Sanders challenges the current administration to fulfill its promises and confronts the troubling trends threatening the foundations of our nation.
The Mystery of the Epstein Files
Let me be frank: I don’t know what’s in the Epstein files, who might be named in them, or even if these files truly exist. What I do know is that Jeffrey Epstein was an extremely wealthy man who associated with some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in the United States and across the globe. This includes former President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, several billionaires, and Donald Trump himself.
During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump explicitly promised that he would release the Epstein files to the public. My response to the president is simple: do it. Stop deflecting attention and be transparent as you promised. Tell the truth. The American people deserve nothing less.
Broken Promises and the Impact on Working Families
Unfortunately, hiding what might be in the Epstein files is not the first time President Trump has broken promises. He vowed that his “big, beautiful bill” wouldn’t touch Medicaid, yet his policies will strip Medicaid from 17 million Americans.
Why is Medicaid being slashed? So that the wealthiest 1% can receive a trillion dollars in tax breaks, and corporations can get $900 billion more in tax breaks. In other words, the administration is making the rich richer while making life harder for working families across the country.
Attacks on Democracy and the Rule of Law
But the assault doesn’t stop there. Every day, President Trump attacks the very foundations of American democracy. He is overstepping the responsibilities of Congress by illegally refusing to allocate funds that Congress has appropriated for education, housing, and other essential services.
He ignores court rulings that don’t align with his views and targets universities for teaching courses he disapproves of. Law firms that have represented clients he dislikes are also under attack.
Undermining a Free Press and the Right to Dissent
Further, President Trump has shown disdain for a free press and criticism. He has sued major media outlets including ABC, Meta, The Wall Street Journal, and CBS. Funding for public broadcasters like PBS and NPR has been cut under his administration.
Enough is enough. Too many Americans have fought and died to defend freedom, democracy, the First Amendment, and the right to dissent. These are the principles that truly make America great.
America’s Future: Government of the People, by the People, and for the People
Whether President Trump likes it or not, America is and will remain a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We will not allow this country to be ruled by billionaire oligarchs who seek to move us toward an authoritarian society.
It is up to all of us to stand firm, demand transparency and accountability, and protect the democratic values that define our nation.
