The Most Insane Police Body Cam Footage I’ve Ever Seen: A Car, Rubber Snakes, and a Florida Jail

Body Cam Shows Sedan Through Florida Jail Lobby, Motor Oil & Rubber Snakes

On June 3, 2024, deputies in Stuart, Florida, responded to a call at their own county jail. Someone had driven a sedan through the lobby entrance. That is already a pretty strong opening to a police body cam story, but somehow it is only the beginning.

The car made it through the entrance. The plan beyond that gets harder to explain.

What happened at the Martin County Jail?

The car was lodged in the damaged entrance, and deputies encountered the man outside near its open trunk. He was wearing a blouse and no pants. Officers ordered him away from the vehicle and told him to get on the ground while trying to work out what he was holding.

The account presented with the footage says he had poured motor oil on the lobby floor and the vehicle and had a lighter. He reportedly threatened to set a fire and made threats against officers. He had also thrown rubber snakes onto the lobby floor. Rubber snakes. At the jail he had just driven into.

Yes, the snakes were part of the incident, not a metaphor.

There is a huge difference between an absurd detail and a harmless situation. Deputies were dealing with a damaged building, threats of violence, a possible attempt to start a fire, and a man who was not following their commands. They deployed a Taser as they moved to restrain him.

“The devil made me do it”

After being tased, the man repeatedly blamed his actions on the devil. When deputies told him to put his hands behind his back, he insisted he could not. The exchange is so strange that it is tempting to search for some tidy explanation. At that point, though, all we really know is what he said and what the deputies were trying to do.

Once they had him restrained, deputies called for a truck to transport him. That did not go smoothly either. He continued making unsettling remarks, resisted being placed in the vehicle, and drew more deputies and fire rescue personnel to the scene. Amid all that, someone asked whether people routinely drove into the jail. The answer was no. Good to have that confirmed.

At one point he claimed to be on a Platinum DoorDash delivery, which adds another baffling line to a night already featuring a sedan, motor oil, and a set of fake snakes. Nothing in the account establishes that he was making a delivery that night.

The ketamine confusion, cleared up

Later in the response, personnel discussed giving the man ketamine for sedation. That prompted some understandable confusion: was ketamine the substance behind his behavior, or was it something responders administered afterward?

The confirmed point in the case summary is that he was given multiple doses of ketamine after being restrained. Authorities also suspected he had been under the influence of a controlled substance, but the material presented does not establish which substance, if any, he had taken before the crash. It would be a mistake to turn that suspicion into a definite explanation for his behavior.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and medically cleared before being returned to the Martin County Jail. Yes, the same jail he had driven into.

Who was charged, and what happens to the entrance?

The man was identified in the video as Joseph Leedy, 40. The reported charges were:

  • Four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Criminal mischief involving damage of more than $1,000
  • Resisting without violence

Those are charges, not convictions. Leedy is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The breakdown does not specify which individual actions support each count, so there is no point pretending we can solve that from a few moments of body cam footage.

After the crash, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office planned to install concrete bollards in front of the jail. That is the practical ending to a deeply impractical plan: put a barrier between the next car and the front doors.

A sedan through a jail entrance is wild enough. Add the threats, the oil, the rubber snakes, and the insistence that the devil was responsible, and this becomes one of those cases where every new detail raises another question. The deputies still had to handle the real risks in front of them, even when the scene sounded impossible to make up.
