In April 1994, Joe Campbell found a newborn baby abandoned in a London phone box. She was only hours old, with her umbilical cord still attached. More than two decades later, a public appeal brought them back together.
That baby, April Jones, now regards Joe as her father. Since their reunion in 2016, they have built a close family relationship, and April has begun raising money to help the man who rescued her retire.
Their story is not simply about finding someone from the past. It is about a connection that survived years of separation and became a lasting source of belonging.
A Father and Daughter Relationship Built After Reunion
When April and Joe returned to Good Morning Britain in October 2026, ten years after their first appearance together, April described him as the dependable parent she had long needed.
She said Joe had supported her consistently since they reconnected, helping her through difficulties and giving her a sense of security missing from her childhood. Their relationship had developed well beyond gratitude toward a rescuer.
Joe’s children also welcomed April as their older sister. She described having three sisters and two brothers through his family, with regular contact making their relationship feel natural.
That welcome had roots in the years before they met. Joe had told his children about April and explained that, although they were not biologically related, he considered her their sister. He hoped they would find her one day.
For April, family is defined by that care and commitment, rather than shared ancestry or appearance.
What Happened in the London Phone Box in 1994?
Joe was heading to a public telephone to call his parents in Guyana, where he is originally from. He had already spoken to his mother, but his father had not been home, so he planned to call again to check on them both.
International mobile calls were expensive at the time. Joe used a green BT phone box with a card-based payment system to keep in touch with home.
The phone box stood near a community center where children played basketball. As he approached in the night, he initially mistook something inside for discarded food wrapping. Getting closer, he realized it was a newborn baby.
April was wearing a baby grow, not wrapped in a blanket. Joe remembered the early morning as unusually warm for April. He personally understood those conditions as a form of divine protection, although that is his interpretation rather than an established explanation for her survival.
When the authorities arrived, they told him the baby was less than 12 hours old.

Why Didn’t Joe Raise April?
Joe wanted to care for the baby himself and asked the authorities whether he could keep her. He was told he could not.
He was single and working in the civil service at the time. He recalled trying to work out how he could take responsibility for a newborn, but the account does not establish the formal reasons behind the authorities’ decision.
Joe said he saw April only once after finding her, during the meeting when they were photographed together. He continued asking about her welfare and requesting contact, but further visits were not permitted.
Although he could not raise her, he never stopped wondering where she was or how her life was unfolding.
The Childhood Record That Helped April Search for Joe
April learned about Joe through a life story book she received when she was eight. Against the background of what she described as an unhappy childhood, the account of his concern for her stood out.
According to April, the book recorded that Joe had sent gifts, money and cards each year. He had also made in-person inquiries about her until he was told to stop.
Those details mattered because they showed that his concern had continued after the night of her rescue. Before April knew him personally, she knew there had been someone who cared about her.
As an adult, she launched an appeal to find both Joe and her birth mother. She doubted that Joe would remember her or respond. Instead, he came forward within 24 hours.
At the time of their October 2026 appearance, April said her birth mother still had not come forward.
How a Newspaper Appeal Led to Their 2016 Reunion
Joe learned about April’s search through a colleague, who brought a copy of Metro to work and pointed out the story.
At first, Joe was unconvinced. Some details were incorrect: the article called him Joel rather than Joe and misstated his origins. He had not discussed April with colleagues at that firm.
A photograph helped him recognize the connection. It was an image he also had a copy of, giving him a much stronger reason to believe that the woman in the appeal was the baby he had found.
He contacted his daughter Rihanna with the news that he thought he had found April. The child he had spoken about for years could finally become part of their lives.

April recalled feeling an immediate connection when they first embraced. Spending time with Joe and his children afterward reinforced that sense of belonging. Their reunion became the beginning of an ongoing relationship, rather than a single emotional meeting.
Why April Changed Her Name from Karen
During her earlier Good Morning Britain appearance in 2016, April had been introduced as Karen. Joe, however, had originally named her April and continued using that name after they reconnected.
On her birthday, April 30, 2026, she surprised him by telling him she had changed her name back to April.
The decision connected her adult identity with the name given to her by the man who found her. It also reflected how important he had become in her life during the preceding ten years.
April’s Fundraising Effort to Help Joe Retire
By October 2026, Joe was working as a bus driver and had undergone two knee replacements. April said she was worried about him returning to work while still in pain.
Her decision to help followed a family dinner she arranged shortly after one of his operations. She had planned to send food home for Joe rather than expect him to attend while recovering. He came anyway, despite being in pain.
Seeing him struggle prompted her to begin fundraising. She wanted to give practical support to someone she described as continually providing for others.
April reported that online donations had reached £20,000. Joe had learned about the effort only a few days before their appearance.
Had Joe Retired?
The £20,000 was a reported fundraising total, not confirmation that Joe had retired. April’s aim was to help him stop working, while Joe made clear that he still enjoyed his job.
His response focused less on money than on his longstanding concern for April. He expressed regret that he had not been able to raise her and explained his belief that every child deserves love and care.
For April, the fundraising was a way to return some of the support he had given her. For Joe, their relationship was already meaningful in its own right.
From a Chance Rescue to a Lasting Family
Joe’s discovery of April in 1994 saved a vulnerable newborn. Their reunion in 2016 gave both of them the chance to build the relationship that circumstances had prevented during her childhood.
A decade later, the result was visible in their regular contact, April’s place among Joe’s children and her determination to support him in return. The rescue began their story, but the years of care after their reunion made them father and daughter.
